Useful Connectors for TCF Canada Speaking and Writing

Same argument, but an answer that uses connectors in the right place sounds noticeably more coherent and structured than one that just strings ideas together with "and" or a series of full stops. Connectors don't make the idea better — they make the argument easier for the examiner to follow, and that's exactly what gets scored.

Learn by function, not by memorizing a long list

The most effective approach isn't memorizing 50 connectors — it's mastering a few per function — adding an idea, contrasting, showing cause — and using them confidently. Three well-placed connectors beat twenty you can only recognize on paper.

1
Adding an idea: de plus, en outre, par ailleurs

Use these to add a new point in the same direction as what you just said — instead of repeating "et" over and over, which makes an answer sound flat.

2
Contrast: cependant, en revanche, toutefois

Use these to present an opposing view or an exception — especially useful in the debate task, where you need to state your position while acknowledging another angle.

3
Cause and result: car, donc, par conséquent

These give an answer a clear line of reasoning instead of just a list of disconnected points — the examiner needs to see the logic that leads from your argument to your conclusion.

4
Conclusion: en conclusion, pour conclure, en somme

Clearly signals the closing point — especially important in Writing, where a clear structure (intro — body — conclusion) is always rewarded.

A note Stacking too many "formal" connectors back-to-back while speaking makes an answer sound stiff and unnatural. In Speaking, mixing in a few lighter connectors (alors, du coup, en fait) keeps your delivery natural — while Writing can afford to be a bit more formal.

Connectors only work once your base vocabulary is solid

Connectors help organize ideas, but they don't replace having the vocabulary to express those ideas in the first place. See TCF Canada topic vocabulary to build a solid vocabulary base before focusing on how to link sentences together.
