How Long Does It Take to Go From A1 to B2?

This is the question everyone asks before starting — and the honest answer is: it depends. But "it depends" doesn't mean it can't be estimated. Here are the real session counts and the factors that decide whether you move fast or slow.

Real session counts by level

In Oui Academy's Speaking Curriculum, each level is broken into a set number of sessions, 60–75 minutes each:

LevelSessionsRunning total
A112 sessions12 sessions
A213 sessions25 sessions
B113 sessions38 sessions
B213 sessions51 sessions

That's roughly 51 sessions with a teacher to go from A1 through B2 — about 55–65 hours of direct class time. But that's only the time spent with a teacher; it's not the total real-world time you'll need to actually reach B2.

Why the real number is always higher than the session count

Class time is only one part of it. Your actual pace depends on:

Straight talk If you only attend 1 session a week and do zero practice in between, 51 sessions can stretch out over a full calendar year — not because the curriculum is wrong, but because the exposure is too spread out for anything to really stick.

So what's a realistic target?

A sustainable pace for most students: 1–2 sessions a week with a teacher, plus short daily practice. At that pace, A1 to B2 usually falls somewhere around 6–10 months, depending on the person. If you have a hard exam deadline (a study-abroad or immigration application, for example), talk to your teacher up front so the schedule can be worked backward from that date.
